Day 12, 30062008, Los Angeles
Chinatown
Since we're all Chinese of course we must head to Chinatown for a look. HAHAHA.
But there was hardly anyone in the supposed-to-be noisy Chinatown! We went on a Monday, that's why. You should go to places like this on the weekends.
It was just so funny because everywhere we went to, most of the shops were closed or deserted.
Here's the Chinatown Gate.
The five-tiered pagoda which was a must-see from what I read but it was just a tiny pagoda!
And a wishing well. HAHAHAHAHA. Wishing well!! O-M-G!
If you zoom in the photo of the wishing 'well' you'll see how pathetic it is. It is not very well maintained! The signs were already broken.
A statue of Sun Yat-sen.
It was recommended that we go to Phoenix Bakery for its whipped cream strawberry cake. And it really is good! The cream was delicious and doesn't taste fattening.
Along that street there were tiled paintings on the wall of the sidewalk.
We went shopping at one of the Chinese supermarkets and we found some hard-to-find goods! Brought home a can of Singapore Curry and Knorr's chicken stock. Yeay!
Beside the supermarket was a dim sum place where we had dinner. But we didn't have dim sum, we had those tze-char kind of dinner.
We hadn't had fragrant rice for many days already, and when we finally got it, it was heavenly! Haha.
And fish is a seldom-seen item on the menu everywhere 'cos it's expensive. But still, we had fish! Hurrah!
Vege.
And chicken. Mongolian chicken.
Chinese Tea.
There were two waiters who served us, one was this middle-aged man who had the hairstyle that was sleek and gelled backwards that you can see the comb lines. The customers at the next table told us that this guy was an actor. He replied 'I suck at acting!' I haven't seen him before. But he's got the seh. Like those suave Hong Kong actors from the 70s. Still, he's very friendly.
The other waiter was an old man from Hong Kong and he was such a pleasant man! He was very nice and chatted with us for quite a while, we all enjoyed his company. He recommended a set meal on the menu for us just in case we wanna go back again, and it was a set for 2. He was like, the Americans can eat a lot but actually that set is already enough for four persons (there was five of us). He spoke to us in Chinese and that made us feel pretty at home. Very hospitable.
What a quiet scene for the supposed to be bustling Chinatown.
The Chinatown Gate at dusk, with the neon lights on. ... ...
Earlier in the day I went to buy some toiletries 'cos I was running out of them. I bought a Colgate toothpaste for USD 1.22 and it was a flavour I haven't noticed before in Singapore.
MaxFresh with mint breath strips. They said strips what.
But what turned out looked like glitter.
I was totally stumped I didn't know what to do. I didn't even know it was going to be purple when I bought it. I couldn't get used to the taste at first brush 'cos I don't use fruity flavoured toothpaste. I wanted it totally mint.
Sigh.
But now I'm more used to the taste already la. Haha. Dumb woman.
